Douglas Ruas' Rio gubernatorial bid hampered by police investigations

The Liberal Party (PL) in Rio de Janeiro is reorganising its slate for the 2026 elections, naming state assembly president Douglas Ruas as its candidate for governor. Ruas, a former state secretary of Cities and son of São Gonçalo mayor Nelson Ruas, is positioned to maintain the conservative bloc’s influence in the state, while facing a strong challenge from incumbent mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD).

The campaign’s momentum has been shaken by a series of police and public‑prosecutor operations targeting figures linked to the previous administration of ex‑governor Cláudio Castro. Recent raids detained a director of the Instituto Rio Metrópole and a former mayoral candidate on suspicion of money‑laundering and illegal weapon possession. Party allies warn that further investigations could further damage Ruas’ image and electoral prospects.
