Douglas Stuart explores father-son dynamics in new novel
Scottish-American author Douglas Stuart, winner of the 2020 Booker Prize for his debut 'Shuggie Bain', has released his third novel, 'John of John'. Moving away from the mother-son themes of his previous works, 'Young Mungo' and 'Shuggie Bain', this new island ballad focuses on the complex relationship between a young man named Cal and his father, John.
Set in the Hebrides, the story follows Cal, a gay man navigating a conservative, Calvinist household. The narrative explores the emotional distance between father and son, as John attempts to raise Cal in his own image while struggling with his own internal conflicts regarding sexuality.
Stuart's body of work, which includes acclaimed novels set in Glasgow, is available in German through publishers Hanser Berlin and Piper. While his stories are independent of one another, they share recurring motifs of shame, family ties, hidden desire, and the impact of poverty.
