Dounan Flower Market expands role as major Asian trading hub
The Dounan Flower Market in Kunming, Yunnan Province, is establishing itself as a major Asian flower trading hub through record trading volumes and advanced logistics. In 2025, the market recorded a trading volume of 15.476 billion fresh-cut flowers, with a total transaction value of approximately 13.484 billion yuan ($2 billion).
The Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center utilizes a high-speed electronic auction system where bids can be completed in as little as 0.6 seconds. This efficiency supports the rapid movement of highly time-sensitive fresh-cut flowers. The market's distribution network currently serves domestic Chinese markets and more than 50 countries and regions worldwide.
Industry activity saw a significant surge during the Qixi Festival period. During this peak, average prices for major flower categories rose to between 1.1 and 1.3 yuan per stem, a 15 percent increase over previous pre-festival levels. Premium roses reached prices of nearly 15 yuan per stem. The industry is a major local employer, with approximately 46,500 people employed in the sector within Dounan.
