Dourados woman remains in preventive custody after setting fire that killed man in bar bathroom
A 36‑year‑old woman was kept in preventive detention by a Brazilian court after investigators said she ignited a fire in the bathroom of a bar in Jardim Itália, Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul. According to security‑camera footage, she used a lighter to illuminate the space while searching for a bag of crack stones, inadvertently setting a plastic bag ablaze. The fire spread, and a man sleeping in the bathroom – described as a homeless individual – was found carbonized on the floor.
The victim was discovered early Friday morning after neighbors heard screams. Police identified the suspect through the video and her clothing, and she later confessed to lighting the fire. The defense argued she posed no public risk, but the judge converted the arrest in flagrante to preventive detention, keeping her incarcerated pending further proceedings.
