Douro Region celebrates 270 years of Port wine production

The Douro Demarcated Region is celebrating its 270th anniversary with a series of initiatives designed to connect Port wine with new and younger audiences. The celebrations include the Port Wine Day on September 10, which features the “Douro + Sustentável” awards recognizing sustainable projects and companies within the wine region.

Events include a tasting of the 2024 vintage at the Institute of Douro and Porto Wines (IVDP) on September 11, followed by a sunset party at Mercado do Bolhão on September 12. This latter event involves approximately 30 producers and aims to showcase the versatility of Port wine in less traditional social settings.

Additionally, WOW is marking International Port Wine Day with a historical journey through the region. The experience spans from the Alto Douro vineyards to the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, covering topics such as terroir, the history of fortification, and the economic impact of the wine trade. The program includes guided tours and tastings, such as Croft Tawny, to highlight the cultural and social history of the territory.
