Douro region hosts festival for Coração de Boi tomato
The Douro region is hosting the festival of the 'Tomate Coração de Boi do Douro' (TCBD), an event designed to boost the local economy and diversify enotourism by highlighting seasonal produce.
Scheduled for August 21, the festivities include a competition to elect the best tomato of the season, judged by a panel of chefs and gastronomy specialists. This year's contest will take place at Quinta do Mourão in Lamego. The program features a traveling dinner focused on tomato-based flavors paired with wines from competing estates, as well as special tastings at the Port Knox cellar.
In addition to the main competition, the event includes a market in Arroios featuring tomatoes, local produce, sweets, crafts, and wines. The initiative, promoted by the Comunidade Intermunicipal do Douro and organized by Greengrape, aims to connect wine producers and rehabilitate traditional farm gardens. Since its inception in 2016, the movement has grown to include over 50 estates that produce both wine and the specific tomato variety.
