Douro region to lead enotourism strategy in Northern Portugal and Galicia
A new report presented in Vila Real suggests that the Douro region should lead a joint enotourism strategy involving Northern Portugal and Galicia, Spain. Promoted by Eixo Atlântico, the study examines the potential of wine tourism in Valdeorras and Ribeira Sacra in Spain, alongside the Douro, Vinhos Verdes, and Trás-os-Montes regions in Portugal.
To prevent potential stagnation or decline in the established Douro destination, the report proposes several initiatives. These include developing ‘author tourism’—a more personalized experience—creating a sustainability observatory, and establishing an innovation hub linked to enotourism. The strategy aims to diversify the visitor experience by connecting wine to local landscapes, gastronomy, and heritage, thereby reducing seasonality and increasing economic impact on local hospitality and entrepreneurship.
