Douro Valley: The home of Portugal’s traditional port wine

The Douro Valley in Portugal is a renowned region characterized by its winding river and extensive terraced vineyards. Located approximately 60 miles inland from Porto, the area is the only legal production site for port wine.

The landscape is defined by steep, twisting valleys and hillsides that change color with the seasons, ranging from dusty brown in winter to gold and red in autumn. The production of port wine remains a traditional and labor-intensive process; grapes are often hand-picked and crushed by foot to maintain high quality, as machinery cannot replicate the results.

Unlike standard wine, port is a fortified wine. During the fermentation process, brandy is added to halt fermentation, which preserves the natural sugars from the grapes and creates the wine’s signature sweetness. Many local vineyards, known as quintas, offer visitors the opportunity to explore the region and stay overnight.
