Douyin launches food delivery app that functions as a savings tool

Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, has launched a unique application called 'Sàm Miêu Ngoại Mại' that mimics a food delivery service but does not actually deliver any food. Launched quietly in early August, the app features an interface similar to major Chinese delivery platforms like Meituan and Ele.me, complete with search bars, food categories, and estimated delivery times.

Instead of sending orders to restaurants, the app functions as a gamified savings tool. When users select items and proceed to checkout, the funds are not sent to vendors but are instead transferred into a 'foodie money jar' within the user's own Douyin wallet. These funds can be withdrawn by the user at any time.

The app uses humorous elements, such as allowing users to enter fictional delivery addresses, to appeal to younger demographics and combat impulsive spending habits. The strategy is viewed as a sophisticated method for Douyin to retain user cash flow and increase engagement within its ecosystem.
