Dove Fire burns 223 acres near Sonora, California, prompting evacuations
A wildfire dubbed the Dove Fire ignited on Sunday at roughly 2:48 p.m. near Highway 108 and Mill Villa Road, southwest of Sonora in Tuolumne County, California. By Monday the blaze had expanded to about 223 acres and was listed at zero percent containment, with fire crews battling difficult terrain, dry fuels and windy conditions.
Cal Fire deployed more than 480 personnel, including air tankers, a helicopter, 22 fire engines and four bulldozers. Two firefighters were reported injured, but no structures were damaged or destroyed. Governor Gavin Newsom announced a Federal Emergency Management Agency Fire Management Assistance Grant that will reimburse up to 75 % of suppression costs.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for dozens of streets in Sonora, Jamestown and surrounding areas, and evacuation shelters opened at the Tuolumne County Community Resilience Center (18241 Bay Ave) and pet shelters in Jamestown. Local officials warned of moderate air‑quality conditions and issued public‑health guidance on smoke, heat and power‑outage safety.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and fire crews continued to strengthen control lines and mop up hot spots overnight.
