Dove Stone Reservoir wildfire forces hundreds of firefighters in Greater Manchester

A large moorland fire broke out near Dove Stone Reservoir in Greenfield, Saddleworth on July 11, spreading to nearby Tintwistle Moor near Glossop. Smoke drifted across Greater Manchester, reaching the city centre and prompting Oldham Council to advise residents to stay indoors.

About 70 firefighters, 11 fire engines and four specialist wildfire units, supported by helicopters, drones and a coast‑guard plane, have been on the scene for several days with no significant rain forecast and high temperatures expected to continue. A 20‑year‑old woman has been arrested and charged with aggravated arson and related offences.

Authorities are working to contain hotspots and reduce the risk of flash flooding and erosion once the blaze is fully extinguished.
