Dovestone Moor Fire Near Reservoir Continues as Smoke Visible for Miles

A large moor fire erupted near Dovestone Reservoir in Saddleworth, Greater Manchester, on the night of 11 July. Smoke was seen billowing for several miles, prompting a substantial response from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, including specialist wildfire units, off‑road vehicles and drone support. The incident follows a tragic drowning of 18‑year‑old Karl Holland at the same reservoir the previous night; youths gathered to honour him and were reported setting off fireworks, which may have ignited the blaze.

Emergency crews have been on scene continuously, employing mechanical ventilation and considering helicopter water drops. Residents have been urged to avoid the area, keep doors and windows closed, and stay clear of the car park, which remains closed due to strong winds and challenging terrain. Police are conducting extensive enquiries into both the teen’s death and the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.
