Downtown Brooklyn undergoes infrastructure and commercial updates

Infrastructure and commercial management efforts are underway in Downtown Brooklyn. The New York City Department of Transportation is installing two new bus boarding islands on Jay Street to improve service reliability and safety. These upgrades, being completed alongside street resurfacing, aim to reduce conflicts between buses, cyclists, and pedestrians by providing dedicated boarding locations and protected areas for cyclists.

Simultaneously, the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership has proposed merging existing business improvement districts (BIDs) to create a larger Downtown Brooklyn Business Improvement District. The proposal seeks to consolidate beautification and branding efforts, specifically targeting the Fulton Mall retail corridor. This move comes as the area faces a retail vacancy rate of approximately 22 percent, significantly higher than the citywide average of 11 percent.
