DOX Centre hosts Andros exhibition on masculinity in art
The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art is hosting ‘Andros: the male body in contemporary Central European art’, a collective exhibition curated by writer and historian Vratislav Maňák. Running until January 24, the exhibition features nearly one hundred works by fifty artists from the Central European region, including the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, and Visegrád countries.
The exhibition explores the evolution of masculinity and the fragmentation of male identity in the modern era. Maňák describes the collection as a visual essay that examines how the male figure reflects the incompleteness of contemporary masculine identity following the emancipation of women and minorities. The works aim to address the tension between failing traditional social scripts and the lack of new, fixed definitions for manhood.
The exhibition complements themes from Maňák’s upcoming book, ‘With Wittgenstein in a Gay Sauna’, which maps the male homosexual experience in Central Europe through reportage essays.
