DP World Constanța to invest €53.8 million in terminal electrification
Constanța South Container Terminal SRL (DP World Constanța) has launched a €53.8 million project to electrify its terminal in the Port of Constanța, Romania. The initiative aims to accelerate the transition to low-emission port operations and support the decarbonization of maritime transport in the Black Sea’s largest port.
The project is co-financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), providing a non-repayable grant of up to €19.7 million. Additional funding includes a loan of up to €25 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), alongside a contribution from the beneficiary.
Key infrastructure developments include the installation of a busbar system to electrify 29 container blocks for future electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) and the creation of a charging hub for electric terminal tractors. Furthermore, the implementation of an Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system will allow berthed vessels to draw electricity directly from the shore, removing the need to run auxiliary engines while in port. The project is scheduled for completion by August 31, 2028.
