Chattogram Port signs NCT concession deal with DP World

The Chattogram Port Authority has signed a 15-year concession agreement with Dubai-based DP World to operate and modernize the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT). Under the deal, DP World will manage the terminal, bringing in US$50 million in upfront signing fees and committing US$150 million in fresh investment for equipment upgrades, automation, and digital integration.

Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam stated that the agreement is structured to protect Bangladesh's national interests, emphasizing that ownership of the land, infrastructure, and assets remains with the government. Sovereignty, customs, and security controls will also stay under Bangladeshi authority.

The signing has faced significant opposition from port workers and labor organizations, such as the Port Raksha Sangram Parishad. Protesters have demanded the cancellation of the deal, citing concerns over job security and the loss of domestic operational expertise. Labor groups have threatened to escalate their movement with a hunger strike if discussions regarding employment guarantees are not held by Sunday.
