DPD RI Special Committee investigates Maybrat conflict in Southwest Papua

The Regional Representative Council of Indonesia (DPD RI) Special Committee for Papua Conflict and Humanitarian Issues has conducted a working visit to Southwest Papua to address ongoing instability, specifically focusing on the Maybrat Regency. During a debate session at the Southwest Papua Governor's Office, the committee gathered information from local government officials, community leaders, religious figures, human rights organizations, and legal counsel for victims.

Key issues identified include the humanitarian impact on displaced persons, who face disrupted access to education, healthcare, livelihoods, and social stability. The committee also highlighted the need for legal clarity regarding the shooting of civilians in Maybrat, emphasizing that the community requires accountability and certainty regarding those responsible.

Committee leader Filep Wamafma stated that the field visit aims to collect objective facts to ensure that subsequent recommendations to the government are comprehensive and directly address the needs of the Papuan people. The committee intends to use these findings to advocate for the community through constitutional channels.
