DPR Commission I supports hijab freedom for Unhan cadets

Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) Commission I has expressed support for the right of cadets at the Defense University (Unhan) to wear the hijab. Sukamta, Vice Chairman of Commission I, noted that Rector Regulation Number 28 of 2025 regarding Cadet Life Guidelines contains no prohibition against wearing the hijab.

Sukamta emphasized that the use of the hijab should be applied consistently across all educational and training activities. He suggested that hijab styles can be adapted to meet the safety and mobility requirements of military training and official duties, citing the diverse models used by athletes as a potential example for physical activity.

The discussion follows reports regarding a prospective student who withdrew from the selection process due to alleged requirements to remove the hijab. While the Ministry of Defense has confirmed that Unhan cadets are permitted to wear the hijab, there have been calls for consistency in how these rules are enforced on the ground to prevent deviations.
