Indonesia prepares Election Law revision amid threshold debates
The Indonesian government and the House of Representatives (DPR) are actively preparing for the revision of the Election Law (RUU Pemilu). Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya stated that the government is coordinating with Commission II of the DPR to prepare substantive positions on strategic issues, specifically the presidential and parliamentary thresholds.
Political parties are presenting various proposals for the upcoming election cycle. The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) has expressed support for separating the Legislative Election and the Presidential Election for the 2029 cycle to ensure the presidency reflects the most current legislative strength. Meanwhile, the Democrat Party is reviewing proposals to adjust the parliamentary threshold, with discussions ranging from 5% to 7%.
Deputy Speaker of the DPR Sufmi Dasco Ahmad noted that the discussions remain dynamic and are in the early stages. Commission II Deputy Chairman Aria Bima confirmed that a Working Committee (Panja) is expected to be formed before the upcoming legislative recess to begin drafting the revisions.
