DPR RI Commission IX evaluates regional health and labor protections

Members of Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) conducted working visits to South Kalimantan and Central Sulawesi to evaluate regional health, labor, and social security policies.

In South Kalimantan, officials reported a 98 percent National Health Insurance (JKN) coverage rate, earning the province a 2026 Universal Health Coverage Award. However, challenges remain regarding early healthcare utilization, the expansion of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program to remote areas, and the need for better social security protection for informal workers such as farmers and fishermen. Environmental concerns, including forest fires and haze, also impact public respiratory health.

In Central Sulawesi, Commission IX Vice Chair Putih Sari highlighted the need for more equitable distribution of medical facilities and personnel. While the province has achieved high accreditation rates for its community health centers (puskesmas), there is a significant shortage and uneven distribution of specialist doctors. The rapid expansion of industrial zones and the region's complex geography—comprising urban, rural, coastal, and island areas—further complicate the delivery of healthcare and labor protections.
