DPR RI deliberates Asset Forfeiture Bill amid transparency concerns
The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) is currently deliberating the Asset Forfeiture Bill (RUU Perampasan Aset), with a target for enactment by December 15, 2026. Discussions are currently focused on two primary areas: transparency of the legislative process and the prevention of power abuse.
Regarding transparency, Deputy Speaker Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal stated that the draft remains unpublished as it is still undergoing refinement and has not yet passed through the formulation and synchronization teams. He noted that releasing the draft prematurely could lead to public misinterpretation. However, groups such as the Aliansi Masyarakat Pati Bersatu (AMPB) have urged for immediate public access to allow academics and legal experts to provide input.
Simultaneously, Commission III of the DPR is addressing concerns regarding the potential for abuse of power. Commission III Chairman Habiburokhman highlighted fears that the asset forfeiture mechanism could be weaponized against political opponents or used by corrupt law enforcement officials for personal gain. The parliament is currently considering whether to establish a new oversight body or strengthen existing institutions to mitigate these risks.
