DPRD DIY addresses pesantren abuse allegations and NYC implements school AI restrictions

In Indonesia, the DIY Regional House of Representatives (DPRD DIY) is addressing allegations of sexual violence at an Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Sleman. The case involves a former student and staff member who reported two incidents occurring between late 2025 and early 2026. Officials highlighted the role of power dynamics in the alleged abuse, noting that the suspect is reportedly the head of the pesantren. Legislators are calling for stronger prevention and reporting mechanisms to ensure educational environments remain safe.

In the United States, New York City is implementing a policy to restrict the use of generative AI for students from kindergarten through 8th grade starting in the 2026–2027 school year. The measure aims to prevent over-reliance on technology and encourage students to engage in critical thinking and direct interaction with teachers. While students face restrictions, teachers may still use AI for lesson preparation, and special education students may use it as a support tool. High school students will instead receive mandatory AI literacy training.
