Bulgaria: Political leaders clash over corruption and law enforcement
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev has launched a sharp critique of opposition leaders Boyko Borisov (GERB) and Delyan Peevski (DPS), accusing them of losing control over state financial flows and public procurement. Radev’s comments followed a law enforcement operation in Sungurlare, where Mayor Dimitar Gavazov was detained during an investigation into public procurement. The Prime Minister suggested this investigation could be the beginning of unraveling larger corruption schemes and stated that the government would continue until reaching the top of the ‘oligarchic pyramid’.
Delyan Peevski responded by accusing Radev and Nikolay Koprinkov of being the true heads of the oligarchy, claiming that Radev directs police and intelligence operations from his office. Meanwhile, Boyko Borisov dismissed the accusations as an attempt to deflect from falling government ratings and rising living costs, such as electricity and gas prices.
Separately, the DPS party has launched a national initiative titled ‘Shield for the People’. The program aims to combat corruption, increase transparency in administration, and protect public resources. The initiative has received support from mayors within the ‘Tolerance’ association, who also expressed opposition to administrative staff reductions in state and municipal governments.
