Dr Amir Khan promotes pelvic floor exercises for one‑third of UK women
ITV medical presenter Dr Amir Khan has highlighted a simple pelvic‑floor exercise routine aimed at the roughly one‑third of women in the United Kingdom who experience bladder or bowel control problems. Citing NHS data, he explained that strengthening the pelvic floor can reduce leaks and improve continence.
Khan illustrated the technique with everyday scenarios – pausing a mid‑stream urine flow when a delivery arrives, and holding back gas in an elevator with a celebrity – to demonstrate how to isolate the front and back pelvic‑floor muscles. He advises performing slow and quick squeezes three times daily, holding each contraction for about two seconds, and continuing the regimen for at least three months, echoing guidance from Macmillan Cancer Support and NHS recommendations.
