African football teams begin AFCON 2027 qualification matches

Several African national football teams have commenced their qualification campaigns for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Leopards secured a 2-0 victory against Equatorial Guinea at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa. Chancel Mbemba opened the scoring in the 4th minute, followed by a second goal from Yoane Wissa in the 72nd minute. The match was played with a limited capacity of 20,000 spectators due to CAF regulations.

Côte d'Ivoire also achieved a successful start, defeating Ghana 2-0 in Bouaké. Malick Yalcouyé scored the opening goal in the 34th minute, and Franck Kessié added a second via a penalty in the 71st minute. Ghana's coach, Carlos Queiroz, criticized the officiating following the penalty decision.

Togo is preparing for its opening match against Burundi. Coach Patrice Neveu emphasized a high-pressure strategy to meet supporter expectations, while new call-up Henri Koudoussou expressed pride in representing the nation. The Togolese squad is focused on using this campaign as a foundation for a new generation of players.
