DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Hits Record Death Toll, Maternal Deaths Rise
The Ebola outbreak declared on 15 May in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has become the country’s largest on record, with WHO reporting between 3,605 and 3,802 confirmed cases and 1,587‑1,707 deaths as of late July 2026, a case‑fatality rate of roughly 44 %. The virus, the Bundibugyo strain, has spread across five provinces – Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut‑Uélé and Tshopo – with Ituri accounting for about 88‑90 % of all cases.
Maternal health has deteriorated sharply: UNFPA data show weekly maternal deaths in Ituri rose from 3.1 to 5.8 per week between 25 May and 19 July, and deaths outside health facilities increased from 9.1 % to 17.4 % in the same period. Fear of Ebola and misinformation have led many pregnant women to avoid hospitals, worsening an already high maternal mortality rate.
The response faces additional strain. Health‑worker protests over three months of unpaid wages have disrupted operations in Bunia, Rwampara and Mongbwalu, and security incidents have hampered access to affected communities. WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Africa CDC Director Jean Kaseya have visited the epicentre, calling for greater financial and logistical support. A new 100‑bed treatment centre is slated to open in Bunia to bolster care capacity.
