Dr. Florin Roșu Warns of Rat Bite Risks in Iași, Romania

Medical experts in Iași caution that rat bites are not a trivial injury. Dr. Florin Roșu, spokesperson for the Spitalul Clinic de Boli Infecțioase “Sfânta Parascheva”, explains that the saliva of rodents can transmit several serious infections, including rat‑bite fever, leptospirosis, hantavirus, rabies (rare), and bacterial complications such as tetanus or sepsis.

Symptoms may begin with fever, chills, muscle and joint pain, rash, severe headache, and leg pain, and can progress to organ damage affecting the kidneys and liver. Immediate first‑aid steps are to wash the wound thoroughly with water and soap for 10–15 minutes, disinfect it, and seek urgent medical evaluation for proper treatment.
