Elijah Hemingway charged in fatal stabbing of Pittsburgh pediatric doctor
Dr. Idris Evans, a 46-year-old pediatric critical care physician and medical director at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, was fatally stabbed in his Edgewood Borough home early Thursday morning. The attack, which occurred around 12:30 a.m., also left his wife, Gina Evans, in critical condition with severe stab wounds.
Authorities have arrested 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway in connection with the killing. Police report that Hemingway entered the residence through a window and attacked the couple with a kitchen knife while they were sleeping. During the assault, the suspect reportedly made erratic statements, claiming to be “God.”
Investigators noted that Hemingway had a significant criminal history, including a recent arrest in July for burglary and theft, for which he was released on non-monetary bail. Hemingway is facing multiple charges, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass. The couple’s two children, ages 8 and 12, were in the home at the time but managed to escape to a neighbor’s house unharmed.
