Dr. Ivelina Bozhkova dies in Rila Mountains accident

Dr. Ivelina Bozhkova, a prominent national consultant in pediatric pulmonology for Southeast Bulgaria, has died following a mountain accident near Malovitsa Peak in the Rila Mountains.

According to the Mountain Rescue Service, the incident occurred during a descent when Dr. Bozhkova slipped on a steep path, reportedly falling over 50 meters. The fall resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury, including a fracture at the base of the skull.

Emergency responders initially dispatched a medical helicopter, but it was unable to land due to difficult terrain and weather conditions. The Mountain Rescue Service subsequently requested military assistance, and a Cougar helicopter from the Krumovo airbase was deployed to reach the group. Despite the rescue efforts, medical personnel could only confirm her death upon arrival.

Dr. Bozhkova was a highly respected medical professional who graduated from Thracian University in Stara Zagora in 2000. She held specialties in pediatric pulmonology and phthisiology and was an assistant at the University Hospital 'Prof. Dr. Stoyan Kirkovich'.
