Dr. Kevin Lau advocates human-centred AI at UN Human Rights Council

Dr. Kevin Lau Chung-hang, a Hong Kong radiologist and founder of Trinity Medical Group, advocated for the compassionate and equitable deployment of artificial intelligence at the 63rd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. Speaking at a side event titled ‘AI for a Better Future’, Dr. Lau emphasized that while AI can enhance diagnostic precision, it must be used to serve human dignity and address global development disparities.

Drawing on his experience with Hong Kong’s Hospital Authority, which utilizes 15 AI models to triage approximately 2,000 chest X-rays daily, Dr. Lau argued that technological progress should not replace human empathy. He stated, ‘AI will read the scan; the doctor must still hold the hand,’ noting that intelligence without compassion is merely computation. The session was co-hosted by the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the UN Office at Geneva and the China NGO Network for International Exchanges.
