Dr. Marc T. Hoffmann highlights rising cybercrime threats to OT systems
In a new episode of the OT Security Made Simple podcast, cyber‑crime analyst Dr. Marc T. Hoffmann explains how organized cyber‑criminal groups target Operational Technology (OT) environments that control industrial processes and physical assets. He warns that global damage from such attacks could reach $11.36 trillion per year by 2026, underscoring the high economic and societal stakes.
Hoffmann notes that 76.3 % of surveyed black‑hat hackers are motivated primarily by the technical challenge and peer recognition, rather than direct financial gain. Critical sectors such as energy, manufacturing and health care are especially attractive because successful breaches can cause widespread disruption. The EU’s NIS2 directive now obliges operators of essential services to adopt comprehensive cyber‑security measures, though some hacker groups claim to avoid targeting hospitals and other life‑critical facilities.
The discussion also highlights that misconfigurations, uncontrolled malware and attacks from other actors can further expose OT systems, emphasizing the need for robust security practices across the entire supply chain.
