Dr. Mariana Scribel advises on winter hair care to prevent dryness and loss
Dermatologist Dr. Mariana Scribel explains that low humidity, hot showers and frequent use of heat styling tools in winter can damage hair and scalp. She notes that "the cold alters the skin’s natural protective barrier and reduces hydration," leading to dryness, frizz, reduced shine, scalp irritation and increased breakage. Hot water strips the scalp’s lipid layer, while dry air depletes moisture from the hair shaft.
To mitigate these effects she recommends using lukewarm water, limiting hot showers, applying a pre‑poo treatment before shampoo, and always using a thermal protector when using a dryer, straightener or curling iron. She advises waiting until hair is partially or fully dry before applying heat and maintaining scalp health through proper nutrition and hydration.
Additional natural remedies suggested for strengthening hair during the season include aloe vera (babosa) gel, rosemary essential oil for improved scalp circulation, green‑tea extracts for anti‑inflammatory effects, coconut oil to protect the fiber, and diluted apple‑cider vinegar to balance scalp pH. Together, these practices aim to preserve the hair’s moisture, reduce breakage and support overall scalp health throughout the colder months.
