Dr. Mehmet Oz faces pushback over grocery price analogy

Dr. Mehmet Oz, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, used a grocery store analogy to advocate for new Trump administration healthcare price transparency rules during an appearance on Fox News. While attempting to illustrate how healthcare costs are often hidden, Oz claimed a stick of butter in America costs ‘about a buck.’

Host Laura Ingraham challenged the claim, stating that butter actually costs closer to four dollars. Oz, who was holding a package of Trader Joe’s butter priced at $4.99, joked that the item might be ‘going bad’ to explain the discrepancy.

The exchange also touched upon New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s initiative to open city-owned grocery stores aimed at providing lower retail prices.
