Dr. Mert Vural warns against common first aid misconceptions

Dr. Mert Vural, an Emergency Medicine Specialist at Erzurum City Hospital, has warned that common misconceptions in first aid can lead to increased injury and health risks.

Regarding burns, Dr. Vural advises against applying substances like yogurt or tomato paste, as these can increase infection risks and deepen tissue damage. Instead, burn areas should be cleaned with clean water for 10 to 15 minutes without rubbing.

For nosebleeds, he cautions against tilting the head backward, which can cause blood to flow into the stomach and induce nausea. The recommended method is to tilt the head slightly forward, squeeze the nostrils for five minutes, and apply a cold compress to the neck.

In the event of an epilepsy seizure, Dr. Vural states that smelling onions or cologne and attempting to force the mouth open are incorrect interventions. The proper response is to place the individual on a flat surface and use a soft pillow to protect their head from impact.
