Dr. P. Krishnan elected chair of global fisheries network

Dr. P. Krishnan, Director of the Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO), has been elected Chair of the Regional Fishery Body Secretariats' Network (RSN) for the 2026-28 term. The election took place during the 37th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in Rome.

The RSN coordinates more than 50 regional fishery bodies globally, addressing critical issues such as climate change adaptation, ocean governance, and the implementation of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement.

This leadership role coincides with India's efforts to develop a National Plan of Action for Small-Scale Fisheries (NPOA-SSF). Working alongside Bangladesh, Maldives, and Sri Lanka, India is utilizing a coordinated regional process supported by the FAO to establish policy frameworks for small-scale fishing communities, which represent the majority of the nation's fishing workforce.
