Dr Ramya Raman elected RACGP President

Dr Ramya Raman has been elected as the new president of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). The election saw a significant increase in participation, with 9,866 general practitioners casting votes.

Dr Raman, a Perth-based GP and former RACGP vice president, will formally succeed Dr Michael Wright at the college’s Annual General Meeting in November. During her campaign, Dr Raman focused on addressing the “cumulative devaluing and the fragmentation” of the profession. Her key priorities include advocating for sustainable funding, protecting the continuity of care, and capping membership fee increases to align with MBS rebate indexation.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) has welcomed the appointment, noting that Dr Raman’s experience as a specialist GP and educator provides a strong foundation for leading the profession through upcoming reforms. The PSA expressed interest in continuing collaboration with the RACGP to focus on workforce sustainability, preventive health, and integrated primary care models.
