Dr. Saurabh Sethi shares breakfast and fruit tips for gut health

Gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi, educated at Harvard, Stanford, and AIIMS, has provided recommendations for breakfast combinations and fruit choices to optimize gut health.

For breakfast, Dr. Sethi suggests options that are high in protein, fiber, and probiotics to support the microbiome and reduce inflammation. Recommended combinations include Greek yogurt with berries and chia seeds, oatmeal with flaxseed and slightly green bananas, and whole-grain toast with avocado. He notes that slightly green bananas are preferable to fully ripe ones because they contain more resistant starch, which aids digestion and satiety.

Regarding fruit selection, Dr. Sethi ranks blueberries and pomegranate at the top due to their high antioxidant and polyphenol content. Kiwi is also highlighted as an excellent source of soluble fiber to assist with regularity. Conversely, he advises against eating overly ripe bananas, labeling them “chocolate bars in a peel” because they contain high sugar levels but lack the fiber and resistant starch necessary to feed beneficial gut bacteria.
