Health experts issue guidance for students as school year begins
Medical experts and the Turkish Pediatric Association have issued health recommendations for students and families as the new school year begins and seasonal transitions occur.
Nutrition and lifestyle experts emphasize the importance of a balanced breakfast containing proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats to maintain energy and focus. Doctors recommend maintaining consistent sleep schedules by gradually shifting bedtimes 15–30 minutes earlier in the weeks leading up to school. Adequate hydration is also highlighted, with a recommendation to consume at least two liters of water daily, while cautioning against sugary or acidic beverages that do not support immunity.
The Turkish Pediatric Association specifically advises parents to review children's vaccination records to ensure all doses, including HPV and seasonal flu shots, are up to date. They also recommend that children showing symptoms of illness, such as fever or lethargy, remain at home to rest. Additionally, experts call for improved hygiene practices in schools, such as regular ventilation and handwashing, and urge school canteens to provide healthier food options instead of processed snacks.
