Dr. Shin Hyun-il publishes thyroid cancer metastasis research

Dr. Shin Hyun-il of the Thyroid Cancer Center at Ain Hospital has published research analyzing the patterns of lymph node metastasis and genetic characteristics of thyroid cancer in the international journal ‘Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research (ASTR)’.

The study analyzed surgical and biopsy results from 135 patients with papillary thyroid cancer, the most common type. Using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), the research compared cases where cancer metastasized to only one side of the neck versus both sides. The findings indicate that the extent of metastasis in the lymph nodes surrounding the thyroid and whether the cancer has invaded tissues outside the thyroid are key factors related to metastasis in the opposite lymph nodes.

Additionally, the study confirmed that varying genetic changes among patients may influence different biological characteristics of cancer metastasis. This research provides a basis for understanding metastasis risks and determining personalized treatment directions. The study was conducted in collaboration with faculty from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Pathology, and Surgery at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic University of Korea.
