Dr. Steven Gundry recommends nine low-sugar fruits for heart health
Dr. Steven Gundry, a former cardiac surgeon and gut health expert, recommends prioritizing fruits that are low in sugar and high in fiber and polyphenols to support cardiovascular health and stable blood sugar. He suggests treating fruit as a “natural dessert” to be consumed in moderation rather than in unlimited quantities.
The nine recommended fruit categories include:
1. Citrus fruits (grapefruit, oranges, kumquats) for Vitamin C and flavonoids. 2. Berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries) for antioxidants and fiber. 3. Pomegranate for its high polyphenol content. 4. Avocado, which is nearly sugar-free and rich in monounsaturated fats. 5. Olives, which provide healthy fats and hydroxytyrosol. 6. Kiwi, which may assist with sleep quality. 7. Unripe green bananas and green mangoes, both of which are high in resistant starch that feeds beneficial gut bacteria. 8. Passion fruit, which is nutrient-dense and contains prebiotic seeds.
Dr. Gundry emphasizes that choosing fruits with high fiber and polyphenol content can help maintain gut microbiota and metabolic health.
