Dr. Thomas Karikari honored for Alzheimer's blood test breakthrough

Dr. Thomas Karikari, a Ghanaian neuroscientist and associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, has received the Excellence in Scientific Research award at the Millennium Excellence Awards in Washington, DC. The ceremony was held under the royal patronage of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Dr. Karikari was recognized for his development of blood tests that could transform Alzheimer's diagnosis. For decades, confirming the disease has required invasive and expensive procedures, such as spinal taps or brain scans, which are often inaccessible in low-resource settings.

Despite initial discouragement from colleagues who believed the challenge was insurmountable, Dr. Karikari pursued the development of a non-invasive diagnostic tool. His research was motivated in part by the limited diagnostic infrastructure he observed in Ghana.
