Dražen Petrović: The legacy of a basketball legend
Dražen Petrović remains a transformative figure in basketball history, credited with opening doors for European players to enter the NBA. Born in Šibenik, his career progressed from winning the Yugoslav championship with Šibenka to becoming a star with Cibona, where he secured two European Champions Cups in 1985 and 1986.
Petrović also achieved significant success with Real Madrid and led the Yugoslav national team to Olympic silver in 1988, a European gold in 1989, and a World Championship gold in 1990. Representing Croatia at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, he helped lead the team to a silver medal, famously proving that European talent could compete with the American ‘Dream Team’.
Beyond his athletic achievements, his personal life included a notable relationship with singer Sanja Doležal of the group Novi fosili. While initially facilitated by a manager as a marketing tactic to garner media attention, the relationship developed into a genuine romance that lasted approximately one year.
