DraftKings rewarded reckless betting behavior in ProPublica investigation
An investigation by ProPublica reveals that DraftKings rewards reckless betting behavior rather than implementing effective safeguards for problem gamblers. During a 10-week experiment, a reporter deliberately mimicked the patterns of a compulsive gambler, transitioning from cautious betting to high-stakes wagering on various sports, including basketball, tennis, and table tennis.
After losing approximately $1,800 in a single night while chasing losses—a hallmark sign of problem gambling—the reporter was not flagged for intervention. Instead, the following day, DraftKings sent an invitation to audition for its VIP program.
The study found a significant contradiction between the platform’s ‘responsible gaming’ prompts and its promotional tactics. While the app occasionally issued warnings after large losses, these were frequently followed by immediate promotional notifications encouraging further betting. Additionally, regulatory safeguards, such as New York State’s requirement to notify users when deposits reach $2,500, were easily bypassed with a single click. Experts noted that high-stakes players often represent a primary profit source for betting operators, suggesting that platform designs may prioritize profit over consumer protection.
