Dragan Primorac and Josip Varvodić vie for presidency of Croatian Olympic Committee

Two prominent figures are contesting the election for president of the Croatian Olympic Committee (HOO). Professor Dragan Primorac, a noted scientist and former sports minister, has received backing from a large majority of national sport federations—reportedly 59—and was praised by physician Dr. Nela Sršen for his international reputation and ability to link sport, science, and education.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Josip Varvodić, also president of the Croatian Swimming Federation and first vice‑president of the European Water Sports Federation, announced his candidacy on a platform called “Together for Development of Croatian Sport.” He highlighted problems with current funding criteria, lack of transparency, and the need to restore trust among athletes and coaches. Varvodić pledged an action plan for the first hundred days after election. The HOO Assembly will vote in secret on July 29.
