Drago Šaravanja, Croatian writer and engineer, has passed away

Drago Šaravanja, a prominent Croatian writer, publicist, and member of the Society of Croatian Writers of Herceg Bosna, has passed away. He died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Born in Lipno near Ljubuški in 1940, Šaravanja spent over four decades in Australia. During his time there, he worked as an aircraft mechanical engineer for QANTAS and studied Croatian language and literature at Macquarie University in Sydney. His academic excellence earned him lifetime membership in the Golden Key National Honour Society.

His literary work frequently explored themes of homeland, emigration, and the experience of returning. His notable publications include novels such as ‘Idemo kući’, ‘Na drugoj strani vremena’, ‘Gelipter’, and ‘Novo odijelo’. He received several honors, including the Fra Lucijan Kordić award for his novel ‘Idemo kući’.

His funeral service is scheduled to take place at Mirogoj on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 11:40 AM.
