Drago Lelas, veteran firefighter, dies from wildfire injuries
Drago Lelas, a veteran firefighter and former commander of DVD Omiš, has passed away following injuries sustained during a major wildfire in the Omiš region. Lelas, 79, died in a Split hospital after fighting for his life for two weeks.
Lelas was the second victim of the wildfire that broke out in Lokva Rogoznica on August 13 and spread toward Omiš. He reportedly sustained his injuries in the village of Dubrave while attempting to defend his own home.
A lifelong dedicated public servant, Lelas spent 60 years in firefighting. He was a recipient of the City of Omiš Award for Lifetime Achievement and was recognized by the Croatian Red Cross in 2008 for making 100 blood donations. He was also a co-founder of the DVD Kučiće and Gata volunteer fire departments.
