Dragon Quest series surpasses 100 million units sold
The Dragon Quest video game series has surpassed 100 million units sold worldwide, according to an official announcement from Square Enix. This milestone includes both physical shipments to retailers and digital sales accumulated since the franchise's debut in 1986.
Creator Yuji Horii issued a message to fans expressing gratitude for their support over the decades. The series, which began on the Famicom in Japan, expanded to North America in 1989 under the title Dragon Warrior. The franchise currently consists of 11 main entries and various spin-offs, with Dragon Quest 12 presently in development.
A significant contributor to recent success has been the HD-2D remake trilogy. As of August 2026, these remakes reached combined sales of over four million units, with the third installment alone selling more than two million copies.
