Drainage infrastructure failures reported in Cancún and Mexicali
In Cancún, recent heavy rains have exposed significant saturation in the Hotel Zone's drainage network. Workers from the concessionaire Aguakan have been working to resolve obstructions, including cutting a pipe to clear a blockage that caused overflows on Pescador Street.
Environmental activists and specialists warn that rapid real estate and tourism growth has exceeded the capacity of a sanitary system that is over 50 years old. This infrastructure strain leads to sewage spills that threaten the Nichupté Lagoon, local wetlands, and Caribbean reefs. The association ‘Defendiendo el Derecho a un Medio Ambiente Sano’ (DMAS) has criticized the continued authorization of new developments despite warnings regarding the existing network's limitations.
In Mexicali, the Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Mexicali (CESPM) is performing cleaning and desilting operations at Dren México following heavy rains. Crews discovered large obstructions, including tires and pole fragments, blocking the flow of water. Officials noted that the accumulation of trash and debris in urban drainage systems remains a primary challenge for the city's infrastructure.
