Drake Batherson and Ottawa Senators negotiate contract extension

Ottawa Senators forward Drake Batherson and the team are working toward a long-term contract extension, but negotiations have yet to reach a final agreement. Both Batherson and General Manager Steve Staios have expressed a mutual desire to secure a deal that keeps the winger in Ottawa for the foreseeable future.

There is significant time pressure regarding the September 15 deadline. Under NHL collective bargaining rules, teams can only sign an eight-year extension through this date; after September 15, the maximum term for re-signing a player drops to seven years. Batherson is reportedly seeking the full eight-year term.

While specific figures have not been finalized, market comparables such as Adrian Kempe and Alex Tuch suggest Batherson could command an annual average value (AAV) in the range of $10 million to $11 million. If such a deal is reached, Batherson would become the highest-paid player on the Senators roster.
