Drake Bell criticizes SAG-AFTRA over health insurance eligibility

Actor Drake Bell has publicly criticized SAG-AFTRA and its president, Sean Astin, after discovering he does not qualify for the union’s health insurance plan. Bell shared screenshots from the SAG-AFTRA health plan website on Instagram, revealing that his reported covered earnings of $17,480.53 between July 2025 and June 2026 fell short of the required threshold.

Bell noted that he was approximately $11,452.47 away from the necessary amount to secure coverage. In his social media posts, he advised others not to become actors or join the union, while also questioning the leadership of the organization.

Bell is not the only performer to raise these concerns. Actors Jack Haven and Heather Matarazzo have also recently voiced difficulties in meeting the minimum earnings requirements necessary to maintain or obtain union health benefits.
